I recently overheard a woman on the subway beating her friend: her toddler, who was just learning to walk, wanted to "dump" everything in the house - coffee table, books, plates, even her mother , just like a picture on a touchscreen, it all disappears in a swipe. Hearing this got me thinking, how much do most of us users know about the knowledge behind the display screen?
Before I started really looking into how touchscreens work, I thought there was a general technology behind the "swipable" phenomenon. But the fact is just the opposite, as far as I know there are nearly 6 species, and most of them are still under constant research. The two most commonly used systems are resistive and capacitive touchscreens. For simplicity, I will focus on these two systems here for your understanding.
This is the most basic and common touch screen, often used in ATM machines and electronic signature devices at supermarket checkouts. These screens actually "resist" your touch, unless you push hard enough and feel the screen bend slightly. This is how resistive touchscreens work, as you can see in the picture below: two conductive layers that bend when touched.
Although the resistive touch screen is durable, the light transmittance is poor due to the large number of layers, which is not suitable for the user's reading experience. And they only touch a single touch, such as pinch-zooming pictures on the iPhone, and they can't achieve it. This is one of the reasons why high-end electronic devices prefer capacitive touchscreens.
2. Capacitive Touch Screens - Capacitive Touch Screens
Capacitive
There are two main types of capacitive touch screens - Surface Capacitive and Projective Capacitive. "Surface capacitive utilizes sensors located at the four corners and a thin film evenly distributed across the surface (as shown), while projected capacitive utilizes individual chips with interleaved rows/columns with sensing capabilities," said the embed responsible for Touch Revolution. Matt Rosenthal, director of the program, explained.
In these two cases, when the finger taps the screen, a small amount of current will be absorbed from the contact point, resulting in a voltage drop in the corner electrodes, and the purpose of touch is achieved by sensing the weak current of the human body. (That's why when you touch the screen with gloves on, nothing happens.) And the software handles the pressure and dictates what to do next. (If you're still confused, take a look at the video demo.)
